Boy Scouts' Camp Minsi offers fun and futures

From The Journal of the Pocono Plateau (July 13, 2012)

Joshua Halbfoerster munches his lettuce as Scout Craft Section
participants learn how to cook Monkey Knots in Dutch ovens.

"They don't get homesick at camp, they get campsick at home," describes Director Lisa Empfield of the Boy Scout experience at Camp Minsi. The Pocono Summit summer camp, nestled in the woods off Route 940 brings Scouts from as far away as Long Island and Maryland for a week long experience, earning merit badges in education-based programs geared to teach life skills.

Over 1,000 campers a season enjoy program areas such as Ecology-Conservation, ScoutCraft, and Communications, exposing 11 to 18 year olds to environmental sciences, outdoor cooking, and even public speaking.

Camper days begin with an optional 6:30 a.m. Frigid Froggy Swim followed by a 7:45 flag ceremony and breakfast. Scouts are responsible for ensuring they attend classes for badges so off they go for the day to sites featuring athletics, aquatics and shooting sports.

Scouts take notes during a Weather Class outside the
Ecology-Conservation Lodge at Camp Minsi July 10.
A crowd favorite, the Muck Hike, takes Scouts on a trek through the swamp. "A Scout is clean but not afraid to get dirty," read t-shirts recipients eagerly purchase upon completion.
Camp directors and volunteers spend their summer vacations bringing various career talents to the site. Teacher and program director Greg Larson says, "We're not just having fun in the woods," listing professions including plumbing and carpentry that are taught in the Ranger Crew. He adds, "When they leave the program they are ready for life."

Registered Scouts are welcomed with their troop or on their own. Social development flourishes as individual campers are invited into a troop for the week.

Waterfront skills in boating and swimming are a crowd
    pleaser at Camp Minsi.
Building a bridge to adventure, adult-led Cub Scouts prepare to cross over into self-sufficient Boy Scouts during Minsi's final week of camp. The new Bridge to Adventure program invites the younger Scouts to experience what's in store as they evolve into Boy Scouts with activity badges including Forester, Geologist and Craftsman.

Empfield considers Minsi's $315 fee exceptional when compared to the other sport and summer camps, as it includes food and accommodations with goal driven activities to earn merit badges. She invites Scouts to visit the website at minsitrails.com/camping or call their council office and pick a week!

    2012 Summer Camp Photo Contest

This summer we are proud to introduce the first-ever Camp Minsi Summer Camp Photo Contest.

We are looking for any pictures that capture the spirit and fun of summer camp at Camp Minsi.

It's simple, really. You take pictures at camp this summer, and then you e-mail your best pictures to our judges. If you've got a winning shot, you could win some awesome prizes and recognition.

E-mail your photos to campminsi@gmail.com with the subject line "Camp Minsi Photo Contest." Be sure to include your name, unit number, rank, home council, and the week you attended camp (a separate category for leaders will also be judged). Deadline for submission is August 31, 2012. Limit three (3) entries per Scout.

So what's in it for you? In addition to being spotlighted here on campminsi.org, the top ranking photos will be published in our upcoming 2013 Camp Calendar! Also, the top three winners will receive special Camp Minsi prize packs including some awesome items from the Camp Minsi trading post.

    Good luck and have fun!

Camp Minsi's Scout Leader Merit Badge

Camp Minsi's Scout Leader Merit Badge is a special award that challenges adult leaders to get out of the campsite, away from the coffee pot, and participating in various activities throughout camp. The program places a series of fun challenges in front of a leader, just as the advancement program does for the youth in the Scouting program. Plus, (just like the youth advancement program) it is fun, and you get a cool patch!

Nothing sets the example for the Scouts working on their advancement at camp better than seeing their leader working on completing their own merit badge right alongside them.

This summer we are excited to release an update to the Scout Leader Merit Badge program at Camp Minsi. This includes new requirements and a new patch!

There are five levels to the multi-year Scout Leader Merit program, with each sequential level getting more challenging. As such, this progressive-award provides returning leaders with new challenges as they move up through the levels of the program. If you have already started the Scout Leader Merit Badge program, there is no need to start over – you can continue with the equivalent level under the new requirements.

You can preview the requirements by downloading the brand-new Camp Minsi Scout Leader Merit Badge pamphlet.

    Camp Minsi 2012 Menu

Tasty, fresh, and filling food is an important part of the camp experience. Everyone at Camp Minsi is served three wholesome, well-balanced and delicious family-style meals. Here's a preview of the Camp Minsi dining hall menu planned for this summer. The menu was been prepared by our camp cook and approved by a licensed dietitian.

Milk and cereal are available at every breakfast; and a full salad bar is available at all lunches and dinners. Additionally, peanut butter and jelly is available as an alternative at lunch and dinner. Beverages available throughout the week include various fruit juices, bug juice, milk, and water; plus hot coffee and tea for adult leaders.

Camp Minsi holds a family night on Sunday evenings; families are invited to stay for a chicken barbeque picnic at 5:45PM. On Thursday evenings, the dining hall does not provide a cooked meal. Instead, units are provided with ingredients to cook their own dinner as part of the camp-wide Iron Chef Cook-off; each unit will choose their ingredients from a provided list (see form in the 2012 Leader's Guide) and are challenged in true Scouting fashion to cook the best dish in camp. If a Scout or leader has any special dietary needs or allergies, a Food Allergy and Religious Dietary Information form must be completed and submitted prior to their arrival at camp (this form can be found in the Resource section of campminsi.org).
